Introducing APFFA’s Co-Chairs

In late 2018, APFFA member organisations signed a multiparty Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which confirmed Dato’ Dr. Joon-Kiong Lee and Professor Derrick Chan as Co-Chairs of a Joint Steering Committee put in place to ensure successful and transparent management of APFFA’s working streams and projects.
We’re delighted to introduce to you our esteemed Co-Chairs so you can find out more about their extensive work and experience in bone health.   

Dato’ Dr. Joon-Kiong Lee DSPN, DJN

Head, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Beacon Hospital, Malaysia

Dato’ Dr. Joon-Kiong Lee is Head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Beacon Hospital, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia, where he also acts as Chief Coordinator and Leader for its Fracture Liaison Service (FLS). Dato’ Dr. Lee is also a member of the National FLS Task Force of Malaysia, and the steering committee for the Asia Pacific Bone Academy, and serves as a trainer for Fracture Liaison Service Program. He also practices at the Advanced Neuroscience and Orthopedic Center (ANOC), Kuala Lumpur.

Dato’ Dr. Lee is current Chair of the Asia Pacific-South Africa Regional Advisory Council (RAC) of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and Coordinator for the Asia Pacific Orthopedic Association (APOA) – International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Orthopedic Initiative Program. He also acts as Coordinator for the IOF-ISCD-AFOS (Asian Federation of Osteoporosis Societies) Tripartite Regional Alliance, and is author of the IOF Asian Audit (Malaysian Chapter) 2009 and Asia Pacific Audit (Malaysian Chapter) 2013.

Dato’ Dr. Lee is the current Vice President, Board Member and Executive Committee Member of ISCD (International Society for Clinical Densitometry) and Immediate Past Chair of the ISCD Asia Pacific Panelist. Moreover, he is current Vice President of the Association of Fragility Fracture Network of Malaysia.

Dato’ Dr. Lee is the Founding and Immediate Past President of the Osteoporosis Awareness Society of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (OASKLS) – Patient Society, and also the Past President of Malaysian Osteoporosis Society (MOS) – Doctor Society in Malaysia. In addition, he is the Founding Member of AFOS.


Professor Derrick Chan MD, PhD, FACP

Superintendent, National Taiwan University Hospital, Chu-Tung Branch and attending physician, Department of Geriatrics & Gerontology, Taiwan

Professor Derrick Chan is Superintendent of National Taiwan University Hospital Chu-­Tung Branch, Hsinchu, Taiwan. He is also an attending physician at the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology, and Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan.

Prof Chan also actively engages in academic societies, including his role as Secretary General and Board Supervisor for the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA), Board Member of the Taiwan Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and Committee Member of the Ministry of Health and Welfare Long-term Care.

In 2014, Prof Chan played a central role in establishing Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) at National Taiwan University Hospital and its Bei-Hu branch. The programs were awarded gold and silver stars, respectively, by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF)’s Capture the Fracture® program. Prof Chan has also been working with the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association to host workshops to expand the FLS network in Taiwan. In March 2017, with 18 programs, the Taiwan FLS network received the Best Secondary Fracture Prevention Campaign Award at the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO) in Florence, Italy.

In 2018, Prof Chan worked with international and regional experts to publish ‘Consensus on best practice standards for Fracture Liaison Service in the Asia-Pacific region’.

In November 2018, Prof Chan served as co-Chair and faculty member of the ‘Asia Pacific Bone Academy (APBA) 2018: Emerging Strategies in Osteoporosis Care’ in Taipei.
